Welcome to Square of Fundamental Rights

The square, which was created in 2005, is located in front of Schlossplatz. Twenty-four double-sided street signs deal with the topics of right and wrong—with statements from judges, lawyers, and citizens who have come into conflict with the law. In 2005, the city of Karlsruhe donated the **Platz der Grundrechte** (Square of Fundamental Rights) to the Federal Constitutional Court as part of its application to become the European Capital of Culture 2010. The artist Jochen Gerz collected statements on **24 signs** that deal with the topic of right and wrong – from judges, lawyers, and citizens who had come into conflict with the law. The city council decided to install the signs on the square between Zirkel and Schloss, thereby declaring this location the Square of Fundamental Rights. A second version of these signs was erected in decentralized locations in Karlsruhe.
